Exclusive Article On Detachment(A)

Jack Murphy from NEWSREP wants to write an article exclusively about Detachment(A) in Berlin to include its many missions during its existence.  This will be a  follow-up article to the short article he wrote and published on 27 April 2016 entitled Detachment A: the Cold War Sabotage Experts of Special Forces.

This follow-up article will contribute to the history Detachment(A) and most importantly to its history in Special Forces.

He would like to hear from Detachment(A) members, so if you are interested please contribute any and all of our many missions and stories to him.

This is the main reason I started this 10 years ago as we were dying on the vine.  Detachment(A) is one of the most distinguished units Special Forces ever had, yet we officially did not exist.  Some of the most qualified Special Forces troops ever created served during the existence of Detachment(A).

Memorial Stone Dedication

The Detachment (A) Memorial Stone Dedication Ceremony was hosted by LTG Charles Cleveland, Commanding General for the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) on 30 January 2014.

The Detachment”A” Memorial stone is in place and the colors were retired with dignity and honor. The dedication ceremony was outstanding, as was the Chicken Friday’s free event, both food and beers. Lots of folks had to cancel due to the weather, however the event was well attended, including Juan Renta, Rocky Farr, Ron Braughton, Jeff Raker, Carl Beene, Gene Piasecki, and many others.

Ballad of Green Beret Auf Deutsch

Aus den Wolken springt der Tod,
Zwoelf Green Berets im Morgenrot
Unterdrueckte zu befrein
Ziehn sie in den Kampf hinein.

Halten dort ein streng’s Gericht,
Fuerchten Tod und Teufel nicht.
Dschihadisten’s feige Brut
Zahlt den Preis mit ihrem Blut.

Wenn auch ein mancher faellt dabei,
Denn die Freiheit ist nicht frei,
In der Heimat warten schon
Die junge Witwe und ihr Sohn.

Eines Tag’s gewinnt auch er
Das Barrett, das Helden ehrt;
Denn wo das Sternenbanner fliegt
Steh’n Green Berets, stets unbesiegt.

Lyrics by Jeffrey H. Raker, CSM USA Special Forces (Ret)

2015 Detachment”A” Asheville Function

Detachment(A) September 2015 Function After Action Report

Our September 2015 function held in Asheville, NC was a huge success.

It began with an advance recon party arriving on Tuesday, 8 September consisting of Gil Turcotte, Rick Westbrook and Kim Kendle. Folks continued to filter in throughout the function.

The head count on Saturday, our main meeting, according to Mike Linnane stood at 90 folks.

On Friday SFA President Jack Tobin gave us an in depth update on SFA today and a glimpse of SFA tomorrow. His informative and wide-ranging lecture was greatly appreciated by all.

On Saturday Darrell Katz gave a captivating speech about the days he was Commander of Detachment(A). He revealed previously unknown and very interesting information that occurred during his tenure as Commander of Detachment(A).

Then Roxanne Merritt updated us on the JFK Museum.

LTC Larry Niedringhaus II who is attending the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA gave a comprehensive and informative speech on SF Operations today which was very well received. He will be receiving credit for the speech for his graduation.

MG(Ret) Jim Guest and Jack Tobin were made honorary members of Detachment(A) and presented with Detachment(A) Lapel pins.

Many thanks to Betty Amaker who set up the JFK Museum gift shop with a wide array of SF merchandise.

The absence of Jeff Raker due to his illness was deeply felt and he was sorely missed by all.

Mike Mulieri came through with his keg of beer.

Many thanks to you all for making this function successful.

DET-A – SOA

Special Operations Association (SOA)

Folks, some good news. The Fayetteville Observer article on our Memorial Stone dedication and my VFW article in the latest issue of the VFW Magazine got the attention of SOA, and were discussed at the recent SOA function in Las Vegas. Jimmy Spoo attended the SOA function and attended the Board of Directors meeting where he presented the VFW article. Both articles were reviewed and a discussion ensued as to why DET-A should become members of SOA.

The Board of Directors approved Det “A” for SOA membership.

I have been a member of SOA for decades and have attended several of these functions. They are great. Our push to get Detachment(A) out of the cold is working.

If you are interested in joining SOA, here is some contact information:
